Chubby Baby Dolphin

PUBLISHED ON MAY 9, 2025   © ALANNA O'DEA

This adorable Chubby Baby Dolphin is designed to work beautifully with a variety of yarn weights - from a light to a bulky weight yarn. The samples shown use a bulky weight blanket yarn and a worsted weight cotton yarn, but you can easily customise your dolphin to suit your style! Make a tiny version for a cute keychain or size up to create a cuddle plushie that's perfect for snuggles.

Pin it now, make it later!

Crochet Pattern Notes

  • Skill Level: Beginner.

  • Written in English using US crochet terms.

  • Read the entire pattern before you start.

  • This pattern is worked using the amigurumi method. Work stitches in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip stitch unless otherwise instructed. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round, moving it up as you work. This helps to keep track of the round and when counting your stitches to compare it with the pattern.

  • To prevent your fabric from showing large holes when stuffed, choose a smaller hook size than that recommended on the ball sleeve of your yarn.

  • Stuff firmly unless instructed otherwise.  Insert small amounts at a time until you get the right look.  Stuffing your toy can be tricky, but it is an important step in getting the right shape and look for your toy: overstuffing might stretch the fabric too far and show gaps, and under stuffing will give your toy a deflated look. Take your time with this step, shaping as you go.

  • To help you when sewing pieces together, first pin them into place and check that you are happy with the positioning.

  • Always leave long enough yarn ends where instructed so that they can be used for sewing later.

  • Yarn and colours are easily substituted at your discretion.

Crochet Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • [...] 'X' times = work instructions within brackets, as a sequence, as many times as directed

  • ch = chain (yarn over, pull through)

  • dec = decrease (crochet two stitches together)

  • FLO = front loop only

  • inc = single crochet increase (make two complete single crochets (sc) into the same stitch)

  • Rnd/s = round/s

  • sc = single crochet (Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops).

  • slst  = slip stitch (Insert hook, yarn over, pull through both stitch and loop on hook)

  • st/s = stitch/es

Pull both yarn tails firmly to create an indent between the marked stitches. Tie a few knots to hold the shaping in place.  Refer to Photos 1.8 and 1.9.
